HOW TO SAFELY DOWNLOAD AND USE A FREE DATA RECOVERY PROGRAM
STOP WHAT YOU’RE DOING

PICK THE RIGHT TOOL FAST
Not all free recovery programs are equal. Some are scams. Some are bloated. Some will overwrite your lost files. Use one of these three. They’re trusted, lightweight, and actually free.
1. Recuva (Windows only)
2. PhotoRec (Windows, Mac, Linux)
3. TestDisk (Windows, Mac, Linux)
Recuva is easiest for beginners. PhotoRec recovers more file types. TestDisk fixes partitions. Pick Recuva if you’re unsure.
DOWNLOAD WITHOUT GETTING HACKED
Free software sites are malware minefields. Download from the official source only. Here’s how.
For Recuva:
1. Open your browser.
2. Go to https://www.ccleaner.com/recuva.
3. Click the green “Free Download” button.
4. Click “Download Free Version” on the next page.
5. Save the file to your Downloads folder.
For PhotoRec/TestDisk:
1. Open your browser.
2. Go to https://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Download.
3. Scroll to “Windows” if you’re on Windows.
4. Click the link under “TestDisk & PhotoRec 7.2-WIP”.
5. Save the ZIP file to your Downloads folder.
Never download from third-party sites. Never click ads. Never use “download managers”.
INSTALL LIKE A PRO
Installation can overwrite your lost files. Follow these steps to avoid disaster.
For Recuva:
1. Double-click the downloaded file (recuva64.exe or recuva.exe).
2. Click “Yes” if Windows asks for permission.
3. Select your language. Click “OK”.
4. Click “Next” on the welcome screen.
5. Uncheck “Install Google Chrome” if it’s checked.
6. Click “Install”.
7. Uncheck “View release notes” when done.
8. Click “Finish”.
For PhotoRec/TestDisk:
1. Open your Downloads folder.
2. Right-click the ZIP file. Select “Extract All”.
3. Click “Extract” to unzip to the same folder.
4. Open the new “testdisk-7.2-WIP” folder.
5. Double-click “photorec_win.exe” to run PhotoRec.
6. Double-click “testdisk_win.exe” to run TestDisk.
Never install to the drive you’re recovering from. Use your main drive or a USB stick.
SCAN THE RIGHT DRIVE FIRST
You have seconds to pick the correct drive. One wrong click and files are gone forever.
For Recuva:
1. Open Recuva.
2. Click “Next” on the wizard screen.
3. Select the file type you lost (Pictures, Documents, etc.). Click “All Files” if unsure.
4. Click “Next”.
5. Select “In a specific location”.
6. Click “Browse”. Pick the drive where files were lost.
7. Click “Next”.
8. Check “Enable Deep Scan” if files are old or deleted long ago.
9. Click “Start”.
For PhotoRec:
1. Open PhotoRec.
2. Use arrow keys to select the drive where files were lost.
3. Press Enter.
4. Select the partition type (usually “Intel” for Windows).
5. Press Enter.
6. Select “File Opt” to pick file types. Press “s” to disable all, then spacebar to enable the ones you need.
7. Press “q” to return.
8. Select “Search” and press Enter.
9. Select “Other” for FAT/NTFS/exFAT or “Ext2/Ext3” for Linux.
10. Press Enter.
11. Select “Free” to scan unallocated space.
12. Press “C” to start.
PREVIEW AND RECOVER FILES
Scans take time. Don’t touch anything until it’s done. Then recover like this.
For Recuva:
1. Wait for scan to finish.
2. Check the box next to files you want back.
3. Click “Recover”.
4. Pick a save location on a DIFFERENT drive.
5. Click “OK”.
6. Wait for recovery to complete.
For PhotoRec:
1. Wait for scan to finish.
2. PhotoRec saves files automatically to a “recup_dir” folder in the same location as the program.
3. Open the folder to find your files.
Never save recovered files to the same drive. Use a USB stick, external drive, or another partition.
HANDLE ERRORS AND FAILURES
Files not showing up? Drive not detected? Fix it now.
If Recuva finds nothing:
1. Run a deep scan (takes hours).
2. Try PhotoRec if Recuva fails.
3. Check if the clone an SD card is physically damaged (clicking noises, not spinning).
If PhotoRec crashes:
1. Run as Administrator (right-click the EXE, select “Run as administrator”).
2. Try a different USB port if using an external drive.
3. Use TestDisk to repair the partition first.
If the drive isn’t detected:
1. Open Disk Management (Windows) or Disk Utility (Mac).
2. Check if the drive appears there.
3. Assign a drive letter if missing (Windows).
4. Try a different cable or computer.
RECOVER SPECIFIC FILE TYPES
Need photos, documents, or videos? These tweaks speed up recovery.
For photos:
1. In Recuva, select “Pictures” in the file type step.
2. In PhotoRec, enable only JPG, PNG, RAW, etc.
3. Look for thumbnails in the scan results.
For documents:
1. In Recuva, select “Documents”.
2. In PhotoRec, enable DOC, DOCX, XLS, XLSX, PDF, TXT.
3. Sort by file size to find large files faster.
For videos:
1. In Recuva, select “Videos”.
2. In PhotoRec, enable MP4, MOV, AVI.
3. Recover to a drive with plenty of space.
PREVENT FUTURE DATA LOSS
Recovered files? Great. Now don’t lose them again.
1. Buy an external hard drive. Copy important files to it weekly.
2. Use cloud storage (Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox). Enable auto-sync.
3. Never delete files permanently (skip the Recycle Bin).
4. Eject USB drives safely. Right-click the drive, select “Eject”.
5. Avoid cheap USB sticks. They fail fast.
BACK UP RIGHT NOW
You have 5 minutes. Do this.
1. Plug in a USB drive or external hard drive.
2. Open File Explorer.
3. Drag and drop important folders (Documents, Pictures, Desktop) to the external drive.
4. Wait for the copy to finish.
5. Unplug the drive. Store it somewhere safe.
